If you had a mountain of LEGO bricks that tall, you would never be able to find that one tiny yellow flower piece you need! **Data management** is the special way we organize all that information so it doesn't turn into a giant, messy pile. ## What is Data Management? Think of "data" as digital toys. It could be a photo of your cat, your score in a video game, or even your name on a school list. Data management is like being the world’s best librarian or a master at tidying your room. It is the process of collecting, sorting, and protecting information so that we can find it exactly when we need it. Without a plan to manage it, data is just a big mess. A famous thinker named Clive Humby, who was very good at math, once said: > "Data is the new oil. Data management usually follows three simple steps: 1. **Sorting:** We put things where they belong. We keep "Photos" in one box and "School Grades" in another. 2. **Labeling:** We give everything a name so we know what is inside the box without opening it. 3. **Protecting:** We put a lock on the toy box so that the data doesn't get lost, broken, or stolen by someone who shouldn't have it.
