Please evaluate DEI in the workplace

We are often told to "bring our whole selves to work" and stand out from the crowd. But is there a hidden cost to constant non-conformity? While diversity drives innovation, the evolutionary and psychological reality is that **fitting in**—conceptually known as social alignment or "cultural fit"—is a powerful engine for human cooperation and survival. To understand why fitting in matters, we have to look at the tension between individuality and the collective. ## The Social Glue: Why Alignment Accelerates Action In the 1930s, French sociologist [Émile Durkheim](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89mile_Durkheim) introduced the concept of **collective effervescence**, a community-wide energy that happens when a group aligns its movements, thoughts, and behaviors. When a team fits together smoothly, it reduces cognitive friction. If everyone on a high-stakes mission—like a surgical team or a search-and-rescue squad—is constantly debating cultural norms or communication styles, the group's reaction time plummets. In his book *[The Righteous Mind](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Righteous_Mind)*, social psychologist [Jonathan Haidt](https://jonathanhaidt.com/) argues that humans are "90% chimp and 10% bee." While we love our individual freedom, we possess a unique "hive switch" that allows us to cooperate selflessly when we share a common identity and set of rituals. > "We have the ability (under special conditions) to transcend self-interest and lose ourselves (temporarily) in something larger than ourselves. I call this the hive switch." > — Jonathan Haidt, *The Righteous Mind* Fitting in flips this hive switch, transforming a group of independent agents into a single, highly efficient organism. ## The Cognitive Savings Account of Shared Norms In cognitive science, **schema theory** explains how our brains use mental shortcuts to process the world. When you enter an environment where you fit in, you do not have to spend precious mental energy decoding social cues, unwritten rules, or communication styles. Sociologist [Pierre Bourdieu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Bourdieu) called this shared, internalized set of habits and dispositions the **habitus**. When a group shares a habitus, collaboration becomes almost effortless. This shared foundation acts as a "cognitive savings account." By conforming to basic group norms, members free up mental bandwidth to focus on complex, creative problem-solving rather than navigating interpersonal awkwardness. ## The Strategic Balance: Structural Holes and the "Broker" The most successful individuals do not choose between absolute conformity and total rebellion; instead, they master both. In sociology, [Ronald Stuart Burt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Stuart_Burt) researched the value of **structural holes**—the gaps between different social or professional groups. Burt found that the most valuable players in any network are "brokers." These are individuals who can fit in with Group A (say, the creative designers) *and* Group B (the finance team). By learning the distinct languages, dress codes, and norms of different corporate tribes, brokers can translate ideas across boundaries. To do this, they must temporarily fit in with each group to gain their trust. Without the ability to adapt and blend in, a brilliant outsider’s ideas may never be accepted by the very groups they want to help.
