Socially Constructed

Imagine if a high school popularity contest was managed by a secret, global supercomputer that decided who you talked to, what you bought, and how you felt about yourself before you even woke up. Twenty years ago, "status" was something you earned in physical spaces—the classroom, the sports field, or the office. Today, our social reality is manufactured by lines of code that prioritize engagement over truth, creating entirely new ways of being human. ## The Shift from Community to Algorithm A **social construct** is an idea or category that exists because humans agree it exists—like money, borders, or "coolness." Traditionally, these were shaped by slow-moving cultural forces. Today, they are shaped by **algorithms**: mathematical sets of rules that determine what content we see. In her seminal work, *The Age of Surveillance Capitalism*, scholar [Shoshana Zuboff](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Age_of_Surveillance_Capitalism) argues that we have entered a new era where human experience is treated as "free raw material" for translation into behavioral data. > "Surveillance capitalism unilaterally claims human experience as free raw material for translation into behavioral data... these data are declared as a proprietary behavioral surplus, fed into advanced manufacturing processes known as 'machine intelligence,' and fabricated into prediction products." This has birthed the **Algorithmic Identity**. You are no longer just who you say you are; you are who the algorithm "thinks" you are based on your scrolling speed and "likes." This creates a "filter bubble" where your sense of what is "normal" or "true" is a unique, synthetic construct designed just for you. ## Virtual Economies and the New Class System Twenty years ago, spending real money on a digital shirt for a video game character seemed absurd. Today, **virtual economies**—systems where digital goods are traded—are multi-billion dollar industries. This has created a new social construct: **Digital Status**. In games like *Fortnite* or *Roblox*, a "default" skin (a free character look) is often a sign of low social standing, while rare digital items signal wealth and power. This isn't just about games; it’s about the **Influencer Class**. This is a social category that didn't exist in 2004. An "influencer" is a person whose very identity is a liquid asset. [Nick Srnicek](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_capitalism), in his book *Platform Capitalism*, notes that these platforms act as the new "landlords" of society. We don't just use them; we live within them. ## Compelling Questions for the Future As these digital constructs harden into reality, we must ask: 1. **Ownership of the Self:** If an algorithm decides which parts of your personality get "engagement" and which are ignored, do you still own your identity? 2. **The Value of the Real:** When a digital badge holds more social weight than a physical achievement, how does our relationship with the physical world change? 3. **Governance:** If platforms like X (formerly Twitter) or TikTok dictate the rules of "Cancel Culture"—a decentralized judicial construct—who holds them accountable? We are moving from a world where we use technology to a world where we inhabit it. Understanding these new constructs is the first step in deciding whether we want to live in the reality the algorithm has built for us.
