Thomas Bernhard

Upon his death in 1989, Thomas Bernhard’s final act of defiance was written into his will: he prohibited any further production of his plays or publication of his works within the borders of his native Austria for the duration of his copyright. This radical "literary emigration" was the logical conclusion for a writer who transformed the **suada**—a relentless, flowing stream of speech—into a weapon against what he perceived as the terminal hypocrisy of post-war society. ## The Übertreibungskünstler: Master of Exaggeration Thomas Bernhard is often classified as an *Übertreibungskünstler*, or an "artist of exaggeration." For Bernhard, the truth could only be approached by pushing a thought to its most absurd and logical extreme. His prose is characterized by massive, unbroken paragraphs and a recursive, musical rhythm that mirrors the obsessive mental loops of his protagonists. In his 1983 novel [The Loser](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Loser_(novel)) (*Der Untergeher*), Bernhard explores the devastating proximity of genius. The narrator and his friend Wertheimer are crushed by the realization that they will never achieve the perfection of their contemporary, the pianist Glenn Gould. Here, the "art of sinking" becomes a philosophical stance—a recognition that to live is to fail, and to fail brilliantly is the only noble pursuit. > "Everything is ridiculous when one thinks of death." > — Thomas Bernhard, [Speech upon receiving the Austrian State Prize](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Bernhard#Prizes_and_honors), 1968. ## The Musicality of Misanthropy Bernhard’s background in music and his battle with chronic lung disease deeply informed his syntax. His sentences do not merely convey information; they breathe. They inhale a premise and exhale a rhythmic, often hilarious, denunciation. This technique, known as **musicalization**, allows his vitriol to transcend mere complaining, turning it into a formal aesthetic experience. In *Woodcutters* (*Holzfällen*), this method is used to dissect the Viennese "artistic" elite during a "supper party." The narrator, trapped in an armchair, subjects his hosts to a mental evisceration that lasts the length of the novel. This focus on the "monologic" self—the solitary intellectual trapped in a spiral of their own making—aligns Bernhard with thinkers like [Samuel Beckett](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/beckett/) and Emil Cioran. ## Questions for Further Exploration 1. **The Ethics of Resentment**: How does Bernhard’s use of "exaggeration" challenge our standard definitions of truth and historical memory, particularly in the context of Austria’s post-WWII "victim myth"? 2. **Prose as Performance**: If Bernhard’s novels function like musical scores, what happens to the reader’s agency when they are swept up in his relentless, unbroken paragraphs? 3. **The Philosophy of Failure**: In *The Loser*, is the "perfection" of the artist Gould portrayed as a liberating ideal or a destructive force that necessitates the annihilation of the "lesser" artist?

To understand Thomas Bernhard’s bibliography is to recognize that he did not write separate books so much as he constructed a single, vast architecture of architectural destruction. His work functions as a **totalizing project**, where the boundaries between autobiography, fiction, and drama blur into a singular, obsessive voice. While the Foundation established his "art of exaggeration," a survey of his primary texts reveals the specific structural phases of his literary assault. ## The Fiction: From Coldness to Extinction Bernhard’s prose moves from the crystalline, static landscapes of his early work toward the massive, single-paragraph "monoliths" of his maturity. 1. **Frost (1963):** His debut novel, which established the "Bernhard tone"—a young medical student observes a painter descending into madness in a frozen valley. 2. **Gargoyles (1967) (*Verstörung*):** A surreal journey through a landscape of physical and mental decay. 3. **The Lime Works (1970) (*Das Kalkwerk*):** A study in the failure of the intellect, where the protagonist, Konrad, spends years trying to write a definitive study on hearing while living in a ruined lime works. 4. **Correction (1975) (*Korrektur*):** Inspired by the life of [Ludwig Wittgenstein](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/wittgenstein/), this novel depicts the obsession with building "The Cone," a perfect architectural structure in the center of a forest. 5. **The Late Masterpieces:** This includes the "Arts Trilogy"—*The Loser* (1983), *Woodcutters* (1984), and *Old Masters* (1985)—culminating in his final, massive novel, [Extinction (1986)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extinction_(novel)) (*Auslöschung*). > "The art I practice is the art of leaving out, the art of passing over, and thus the art of making the points I want to make by not making them." > — Thomas Bernhard, as quoted in [The New York Review of Books](https://www.nybooks.com/articles/2010/12/23/thomas-bernhards-total-art/). ## The Autobiographical Cycle: The Five-Part "Origin" One of Bernhard’s most significant contributions is his five-volume autobiographical project. Rather than a traditional memoir, these books act as a **genealogy of resentment**, tracing the trauma of his upbringing in Nazi-occupied Austria. - **A Child (1982) (*Ein Kind*):** An exploration of the psychological landscape of childhood. - **An Indication of the Cause (1975) (*Die Ursache*):** A scathing indictment of the educational system in Salzburg. - **The Cellar (1976) (*Der Keller*):** His decision to leave school and work in a grocery store as a form of social liberation. - **Breath (1978) (*Der Atem*):** A harrowing account of his near-fatal lung disease. - **In the Cold (1981) (*Die Kälte*):** His time in a sanatorium, facing death and isolation. ## The Drama: Breath and Ritual Bernhard’s plays often focus on the absurdity of the "ritual" of living. Notable works include: - **The Force of Habit (1974):** A circus director attempts to rehearse a Schubert quintet with performers who cannot play. - **Minetti (1977):** A play written for the famous actor [Bernhard Minetti](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernhard_Minetti), focusing on an aged actor waiting for a director who will never come. - **Heldenplatz (1988):** His most controversial play, which triggered a national scandal by suggesting that modern Vienna was as anti-Semitic as it was in 1938. Bernhard's early career also included significant poetry, such as *In Hora Mortis* (1958), which provides a surprising glimpse into a more overtly religious, though still desperate, metaphysical struggle before he transitioned fully to the prose-rhythm that defined his legacy.

Regarding: "Correction"

Imagine a man so consumed by the pursuit of absolute perfection that he spends years constructing a massive, geometrically flawless "Cone" in the center of a dense Austrian forest, only to realize that the existence of this masterpiece necessitates his own annihilation. This is the central premise of Thomas Bernhard’s 1975 novel, [Correction](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correction_\(novel\)), a work that functions less like a traditional narrative and more like a high-speed centrifugal machine of the mind. ### The Anatomy of the Cone At the heart of the novel is Roithamer, a brilliant scientist and philosopher modeled closely on the life and temperament of [Ludwig Wittgenstein](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/wittgenstein/). Roithamer’s life work is the "Cone," an architectural marvel designed specifically for his sister. However, "correction" in Bernhard’s world is not merely an editing process; it is a lethal, recursive intellectual movement. To correct a thought is to find its flaw; to correct a life is to recognize its fundamental error. As Roithamer nears the completion of his project, he enters a spiral of "self-correction" where the refinement of his manuscript and the refinement of his existence become indistinguishable from their destruction. > "We are constantly correcting, and because we are constantly correcting, we are constantly destroying, and because we are constantly destroying, we are ultimately destroyed ourselves." — Thomas Bernhard, *Correction* ### The Recursive Aesthetic Bernhard utilizes a "monolithic" prose style—vast blocks of text without paragraph breaks—to mirror Roithamer's claustrophobic obsession. This stylistic choice forces the reader into a state of intellectual breathlessness, mimicking the protagonist’s descent into madness. The narrative is filtered through an unnamed friend who arrives at the "Hoeller garret" to sort through Roithamer’s papers after his suicide. This layering creates a sense of "reported thought," where the narrator reflects on Roithamer reflecting on the world. ### Philosophical Perspectives: Perfection vs. Existence The novel invites a debate on the costs of the "high intellect." Some critics, such as George Steiner, have viewed Bernhard’s work as a late-stage manifestation of Central European nihilism. Others see it as a critique of the Enlightenment ideal: the belief that reason and mathematics can provide a "home" for the human spirit. Roithamer’s failure suggests that the "perfect" structure (the Cone) is uninhabitable for a "perfected" human being. The act of "correction" becomes a pursuit of the void—a realization that the only way to truly "correct" the messiness of life is to cease existing. ### Compelling Questions for Exploration 1. If the pursuit of perfection leads inevitably to destruction, is the "unfinished" work the only safe space for human creativity? 2. To what extent does Roithamer’s obsession with his sister represent a failed attempt at human connection through the medium of cold, mathematical logic? 3. Is Bernhard’s prose an act of "correction" against the German language itself, attempting to strip it of sentimentality until only the bare, rhythmic skeleton remains?
