What are the key value decisions that most divide British voters this year ?

Did you know that in modern Britain, whether you have a university degree is now a more accurate predictor of your vote than how much money you have in the bank? For decades, British politics was a battle of the "pockets"—a struggle between the working class and the middle class over taxes and unions. Today, that has been replaced by a battle of the "passports," where the deepest divides are no longer about wealth, but about identity, belonging, and how we view the world. ## Anywheres vs. Somewheres The most significant value decision dividing the UK is the tension between what journalist David Goodhart calls the **"Anywheres"** and the **"Somewheres."** This framework, popularized in his book [*The Road to Somewhere*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Road_to_Somewhere), suggests that the country is split by its relationship to place. - **Anywheres:** Highly educated, mobile people who value autonomy and global integration. They view the world through "achieved identities" (their careers and degrees). - **Somewheres:** People deeply rooted in specific communities who value security, tradition, and "ascribed identities" (their family, faith, and local town). > "Anywheres prioritize freedom, mobility and novelty; Somewheres prioritize group identity, tradition and continuity." — David Goodhart ## The Net Zero Dilemma Voters are increasingly divided over the **cost of conscience**. While most Britons agree that climate change is a threat, they are split on who should pay to fix it. This is a value decision between **Environmental Stewardship** and **Economic Survival**. Voters in urban centers often support aggressive "Net Zero" targets, such as banning petrol cars or installing expensive heat pumps. However, in former industrial "Red Wall" towns, these policies are often seen as a luxury tax on the working class. This divide was famously highlighted during the [Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Uxbridge_and_South_Ruislip_by-election), where a local "clean air" driving charge (ULEZ) determined the outcome of a national political race. ## The Generational Social Contract Perhaps the most explosive divide is the value of **Fairness across Time**. The UK is currently grappling with a "Generational Chasm" regarding housing and state support. 1. **The Asset Owners:** Older voters often prioritize the "triple lock" on pensions and the protection of local green belts (preventing new housing). 2. **The Renters:** Younger voters, facing a [housing crisis](https://www.resolutionfoundation.org/publications/the-housing-gap/), value radical reform of planning laws and wealth redistribution. This isn't just about money; it's a moral question: Does a society owe more to those who have contributed to it for forty years, or to those who need to build a future within it? *** **Explore Further:** - How does the "Education Gap" in the UK compare to the "Diploma Divide" seen in the United States? - If identity is now more important than class, can political parties ever truly represent a "national" interest again? - To what extent does the divide between London and the "Rest of the UK" mirror the global tension between urban hubs and rural heartlands?

In 2022, a British primary school's decision to go meat-free for its lunches sparked a national outcry, with some parents even hand-delivering sausages through the school gates in protest. This wasn't just a squabble over nutrition; it was a flashpoint in a new kind of "Culture War." In modern Britain, what you choose to eat has become a powerful signal of where you stand on the value spectrum. ## Diets as Globalist Ethics While the Foundation discussed the "Anywheres" through the lens of their careers, vegetarianism highlights their **Ethical Universalism**. For many "Anywheres," morality is not confined by national borders or species lines. This perspective is deeply influenced by thinkers like [Peter Singer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Singer), whose landmark 1975 book [*Animal Liberation*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_Liberation_(book)) argued that "speciesism" is a prejudice similar to racism or sexism. > "The claim that we should prioritize the interests of our own species is no more justifiable than the claim that we should prioritize the interests of our own race." — Peter Singer To an "Anywhere," adopting a plant-based diet is a way to align with a global, scientific consensus on carbon footprints and animal rights. It is an expression of an **achieved identity**—one built on personal research and global conscience rather than inherited custom. ## The Sunday Roast and "Somewhere" Identity For "Somewheres," dietary choices are often less about global ethics and more about **Cultural Continuity**. The "Sunday Roast" isn't just a meal; it is a ritual of British family life and a symbol of support for the domestic farming industry. When political movements or urban activists advocate for "meat taxes" or "plant-based treaties," many "Somewheres" perceive it as an attack on their way of life. This creates a fascinating tension: - **The Rural Economy:** Farmers are the quintessential "Somewheres," tied to a specific piece of land for generations. - **The Heritage Defense:** For this group, vegetarianism can feel like another "top-down" imposition by urban elites who don't understand the realities of the countryside. ## The "Woke" vs. "Common Sense" Divide Vegetarianism has increasingly been swept into the broader "Anti-Woke" narrative. Political commentators often use "avocado-toast eaters" or "tofu-munching" as pejorative labels for people they perceive as out of touch with the working class. According to data from [YouGov](https://yougov.co.uk/topics/lifestyle/trackers/diet-of-the-british-public), there is a significant "Diploma Divide" in diet: university-educated voters are far more likely to be vegetarian than those without degrees. This reinforces the idea that diet is a **class signifier**. It isn't just about what is on the fork; it is a battle between: 1. **Moral Progressivism:** The idea that we must evolve our habits to save the planet. 2. **Traditionalism:** The belief that "common sense" and established British traditions should be protected from radical change. In this light, a burger is no longer just a burger—it is a ballot paper. Whether you see a steak as a delicious tradition or an ecological disaster depends almost entirely on which side of the Great British Values Gap you call home.

Imagine your dinner plate is not just a source of calories, but a voting ballot. Every meal is a choice to either uphold the traditions of your ancestors or to cast a vote for the future of the planet. For the "Anywhere"—a term coined by [David Goodhart](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Road_to_Somewhere) to describe mobile, degree-educated people—choosing a plant-based diet is a profound act of self-authorship. It is the moment an individual steps away from the "default" settings of their culture and enters a world of reasoned, global responsibility. ## Beyond the "Inherited" Life Most of us eat what we eat because our parents did. This is **ascribed identity**—a set of habits handed down like an old coat. However, the modern "Anywhere" values **achieved identity**. This is an identity you build for yourself through research, travel, and reflection. Choosing a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle is a signal that you are no longer bound by the local customs of a single village or town. Instead, you are a citizen of a globalized world. As philosopher [Peter Singer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Singer) argues in his seminal work, *The Expanding Circle*, moral progress is defined by our ability to extend our concern beyond our immediate "tribe" to include all sentient beings. > "The circle of altruism has broadened from the family and tribe to the nation and race, and we are beginning to recognize that our obligations extend to all human beings, and even to non-human animals." > — [Peter Singer, *The Expanding Circle*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Expanding_Circle) ## The Rationality of the Plate This isn't just about "feelings"; it is about aligning one's life with empirical reality. To an "Anywhere," the data on climate change is an urgent call to action. A landmark [study by Oxford University](https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2018-06-01-new-estimates-environmental-cost-food) published in the journal *Science* found that avoiding meat and dairy is the "single biggest way" to reduce your impact on Earth. 1. **Land Use:** Research shows that if the world went vegan, global farmland use could be reduced by 75%. 2. **Carbon Footprint:** Plant-based diets can reduce food-related greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70%. 3. **Water Scarcity:** Producing a single beef burger requires roughly 2,500 liters of water—more than most people use for showering in a month. ## A Global Conscience For a student today, the "Anywhere" perspective offers a sense of agency. In a world of massive, uncontrollable global forces, what you put on your fork is one of the few things you *can* control. By adopting a plant-based diet, you aren't just following a trend; you are participating in a **scientific consensus**. You are deciding that your personal habits should reflect your values regarding justice, ecology, and the rights of the voiceless. It is the ultimate expression of a mind that has decided to think for itself.
