Why the Film’s Cultural Effort Matters
Dances with Wolves stands out because, unlike most Hollywood Westerns of its era, it took concrete steps toward cultural authenticity. The film includes substantial Lakota dialogue rather than translating or substituting English, which gives Native characters greater linguistic integrity and helps viewers appreciate cultural difference rather than erasing it. It also depicts communal practices—council meetings, ritual activities, daily family life—emphasizing social structures and relationships instead of reducing Indigenous people to background spectacle. Finally, the production employed Native consultants and cast members (such as Graham Greene and Rodney A. Grant), which improved the portrayal of gestures, costumes, and customs and created opportunities for Indigenous performers. These choices do not eliminate all problems with representation, but they mark a notable departure from the common Hollywood tendency to omit or misrepresent Native languages and communal life, and they contributed to a more textured, humanized depiction of Lakota people.
