Representation Progress in Dances with Wolves
Dances with Wolves marked a notable shift in Hollywood’s depiction of Native Americans by casting Native actors in prominent roles and incorporating the Lakota language into substantial parts of the dialogue. Compared with earlier Westerns that frequently used non-Native actors in redface or reduced Indigenous characters to one-dimensional stereotypes, this film’s effort to present complex Indigenous characters and to give them linguistic and cultural presence represented a meaningful, if imperfect, advance.
This progress matters because authentic casting and language use help disrupt longstanding misrepresentations, allow for more credible portrayals, and create space for Indigenous voices and performers within mainstream cinema. At the same time, these improvements coexist with problematic elements—such as romanticization and a narrative that centers a white protagonist’s redemption—which remind us that representation can be bettered rather than perfected.
