Is time real?

If you were to commit a crime, a **Presentist** would argue that the event has vanished into non-existence, while an **Eternalist** would claim it was always there, waiting for you to arrive. Only the **Growing Block Theory (GBT)** captures the profound gravity of human agency: the idea that our actions are the literal architects of a permanent, expanding reality. In this view, the universe is not just "happening"; it is an accumulating archive where every choice is etched into the indestructible bedrock of spacetime. ### The Moral Weight of Ontological Permanence While Presentism struggles to explain why we should care about a past that no longer exists, GBT provides a robust ontological foundation for **Retributive Justice** and historical trauma. If the past is real, then a victim's suffering is not a "memory" of a ghost; it is a permanent feature of the universe's geometry. [Michael Tooley](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Tooley), in his seminal work [*Time, Tense, and Causation*](https://academic.oup.com/book/11545), argues that the passage of time is essentially the "acquisition of new facts." > "The world at a given time is a different world from the world at an earlier time, not because things have changed their properties, but because there are more facts." This "accumulation of facts" gives our lives a terrifying and beautiful significance. We are not merely moving through time; we are creating the universe's fixed history. When we act, we are "freezing" the liquid uncertainty of the future into the solid, eternal diamond of the past. ### The Thermodynamic Engine of Growth A novel way to visualize GBT is through the lens of the **Second Law of Thermodynamics**. We can view the growth of the block as the physical manifestation of increasing [entropy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entropy). As energy disperses and information is processed, the "block" of the universe thickens. In this framework, the "Present" is the thermodynamic heat-front where high-ordered possibilities are converted into high-entropy, disordered, but *real* history. This aligns with the **Information Conservation** principle. If information cannot be destroyed, as suggested by modern physics, then the past must remain ontologically secure to "house" that information. GBT serves as the "Universal Ledger"—a write-only memory bank that ensures the conservation of every quantum state that has ever occurred. ### Reconciling Relativity: The "Objective" Accretion Critics often cite Einstein’s [Relativity](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/spacetime-becoming/) to debunk any theory requiring a universal "Now." However, GBT proponents like [Peter Forrest](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Forrest) suggest that the "edge of the block" need not be a flat, universal plane. Instead, it can be a jagged, local frontier. 1. **Local Growth:** Each world-line (the path of an object through spacetime) "grows" at its own proper rate. 2. **Causal Connection:** The block expands only where causal interactions occur, meaning the "growth" is a product of physical relations, not a mystical clock. 3. **The Open Future:** Unlike the "Block Universe" which implies [Determinism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Determinism), GBT allows for genuine contingency. The future is a blank page, and we are the ink. By treating time as an **accreting process** rather than a static dimension, we respect both the rigid truth of history and the radical freedom of the next moment.
