In Barbour's framework, change is not a transition from one moment to the next, but a reflection of the structural differences between these snapshots.
If we view the universe this way, we can discuss "history" as a matter of internal evidence within a single snapshot. For example, a fossil does not "prove" the past happened; it is simply a piece of information that exists in the *current* configuration of the world that suggests a relationship to other possible configurations. ## Tenseless Language and Logic
To speak of a timeless reality, philosophers often turn to the **B-Theory of time**, which utilizes a "tenseless" logic. In this framework, we strip away words like "is," "was," and "will be," replacing them with temporal relations like "earlier than," "later than," or "simultaneous with."
1. **Temporal Parochialism:** Our linguistic dependence on tenses is a byproduct of our biological evolution, not a requirement of physical law.
2. **Eternal Sentences:** Logician W.V.O. Quine proposed using "eternal sentences"—statements that are true regardless of when they are uttered. Instead of "It is raining," we say "It rains at [Coordinate X] at [Configuration Y]."
