How can we reconcile physical indeterminism with human freedom and rationality?
Popper uses the metaphor of clouds (highly irregular, unpredictable systems like weather or gas molecules) and clocks (perfectly regular, predictable systems like planetary orbits) to explore the spectrum between complete disorder and perfect determinism.
The essay challenges both classical determinism ("all is clockwork") and the view that quantum randomness alone explains freedom. Instead, Popper argues that human freedom emerges from a sophisticated interplay of physical plasticity, hierarchical organization, objective knowledge, and critical rationality.
