Classical physics (Newton, Laplace) suggested the universe is a perfect clock - given complete knowledge of present states, we could predict all future events with perfect precision. This "Laplacian determinism" made human freedom seem impossible: we would be mere automata, our actions predetermined by the positions of particles at the Big Bang.
